Light Sound Art Film calls on Australian filmmakers shooting on celluloid to join new feature documentary The New New Wave

Australia, 28 September 2026 — Light Sound Art Film is inviting Australian filmmakers who shoot on 16mm and 35mm film to share their stories and footage for The New New Wave, a feature documentary about the growing movement of filmmakers returning to celluloid.

The film marks the opening of two new 16mm and 35mm motion picture film processing labs in Australia and follows a new generation of filmmakers who are choosing film over digital. Is a resistance against AI, or just the search for something more authentic in a digitally saturated world?

We want to find out why we are so drawn to this medium and to celebrate capture, share, celebrate and encourage both this movement and this moment in time.

"The movement towards film and celluloid is a community-based movement and the most exciting creative storytelling space in Australia right now," said director Jolyon Hoff. “We are convinced that the next Phillip Noyce, Gillian Armstrong or Peter Weir will come from this group of filmmakers. Like the earlier Australian New Wave, and the French New Wave before them, this is the community who will, through sheer grit and determination, define our culture into the future. We want to capture, share, celebrate this moment in time.”

The production is looking for Australian filmmakers working on celluloid who are willing to:

Share footage from their films for use in the documentary
Take part in an on-camera interview about why they choose to shoot on film
